Youth Red Cross

Youth Red Cross Odisha is the young and vibrant wing of Indian Red Cross Society-Odisha State Branch (IRCS-OSB) functioning in all Colleges and universities.  To ignite within the Youth the indomitable will to serve the society, Youth Red Cross, Odisha was formed in the year 1993.

Youth Red Cross, Odisha has the objective to train the Zealous Youth with the fundamental principles of Red Cross so that they may remain unperturbed and develop in them the spirit of selfless service & Volunteerism to serve the most Vulnerable people, globally and locally and it carries out its social commitment and responsibility under the frame of Seven fundamental principles of Red Cross such as Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, Universality.

There are nearly more than 6 lakhs volunteers in more than 2000 Colleges and 2000 trained Counsellors under the Youth Red Cross unit in Odisha.

 

Objectives

The objectives of Youth Red Cross (Odisha) is to train the “Zealous” Youth, in the Fundamental Principles of Red Cross, so that they remain “imperturbable, un-wearying, unfaltering” & develop in them the elements of “quiet self-sacrifice” when disasters strike humanity. Keeping this in view the Youth Red Cross endeavors as follows for:

  1. Promotion of potentialities of the Youth to enable them to render skilled philanthropic service toned up by a sense of self-sacrifice, for the mitigation of suffering of the needy and the distressed;
  2. Promotion of health, hygiene and sanitation and cognate subjects among the members of the community for prevention of diseases and mitigation of suffering;
  3. Promotion of motivation among the youth for fostering friendship and fraternity(the spirit of “Tutti-Fratelli”) at the National and international level;
  4. Promotion of qualities of leadership and traits of personality among the youth;
  5. Promotion of sprit of self-reliance and dignity of labour among the youth;
  6. Promotion of training in various skills to render qualified service to the needy;
  7. Promotion of factors which may contribute to the establishment of peace at the national and international level;

 

Youth Red Cross, Odisha is active in the areas like

 

  • Voluntary Blood Donation

Youth Red Cross has steered a revolution in the field of donating blood by organising blood donation camps in the Youth Red Cross units across the State. The Youth Red Cross units of different Colleges are organising Voluntary Blood Donation Camps to provide safe Blood to the needy patients.

  • Promotion of Health & Hygiene

Youth Red Cross Volunteers are involved in organising Health Camps to  safeguard the health status of the Vulnerable people who are deprived of the basic amenities of health services.

To provide health services the Youth Red Cross units of the Colleges are organising health check-up Camps involving the Youth Red Cross Volunteers in remote and interior areas where health services are not available for the vulnerable section of the people and providing medicines free of cost. Under the umbrella of Youth Red Cross, 704 Red Ribbon Clubs are functional in different Colleges of the State. The role of Youth Red Cross Volunteers in spreading awareness on the deadly disease HIV/AIDS & the associated social stigma is exemplary.

For spreading awareness on the deadly disease of HIV/AIDS, OSACS (Odisha State AIDS Control Society) has released an amount of Rs. 25.60 Lakhs in the year 2014-15 and the amount is disposed as financial support to 640 Colleges where Red Ribbon Clubs are functioning both in Degree and P.G. Colleges @ Rs. 4,000/- Per College for conducting Red Ribbon activities.

  • Disaster Preparedness

The capacities of Youth Red Cross Volunteers are enhanced by training them to deal effectively with pre, during & post disaster scenario.

  • Road Safety

Considering the increasing number of road accidents and loss of precious life, Youth Red Cross Volunteers are trained to be safe on road & spread this message among peers as well as road users at large.

  • Awareness Drives

Awareness Drives are organised by Youth Red Cross Volunteers for a green & clean environment, prevention of endemic diseases etc. by involving the community.

  • Organisation of District Committee Meeting

The District Committee meetings are being organized mostly in the Nodal Colleges under the leadership of the Convener Secretary. The objective of the meeting is to review the Youth Red Cross activities of all Colleges of the District and to prepare an action plan for the entire district and to motivate the Youth Red Cross Counsellors to spread the message of Red Cross among the Students.

 

  • Awareness Drives on environment & Climate Change

Awareness Drives are organised by YRC Volunteers for a Green & Clean Environment, Plantation of trees & Climate Change.

 

  • Awareness Drive on endemic diseases

Awareness drives are organised for prevention of endemic diseases such as Dengue, Malaria, and Diarrhea by involving the Youth Red Cross Volunteers in Peer Groups as well as the community.

  • Disaster Preparedness

The capacities of Youth Red Cross Volunteers are enhanced by training them to deal effectively with pre, during & post disaster scenario.

 

  • Capacity Building of Youth Red Cross Volunteers

Various training camps are organized at District level, Zonal level & State level to strengthen Red Cross movement across the State & to build the capacity of Youth Red Cross Volunteers with various life skills so that they can render effective humanitarian service during Disaster and Emergencies. First Aid & Search & Rescue trainings are provided to Youth Red Cross Volunteers to build up their capacity for providing effective service at the time of need. Their capacity is also enhanced by training them to deal effectively with pre, during & post disaster scenario.

  • First Aid Training Programme

To inculcate the basic knowledge on First Aid the Youth Red Cross Volunteers are imparted First Aid Training in different Colleges of the State.
